From Our CEO
At Alvean, we lead the changes that shape the global market for sugar. As a specialist in the origination, commercialization and trading of raw and white sugar globally, we have worked closely with some of the world’s biggest food companies. Today, we are privileged to have Copersucar, the world’s largest originator and exporter of cane sugar, and one of the largest ethanol marketers, as our parent company. Why does this matter? Our long-standing presence in the global sugar market gives us deep understanding of the challenges faced by the sugar industry. In particular, while the main actors in sugarcane farming and milling have invested heavily to limit their environmental impact, there are still improvements that can be made in terms of sustainability. And through our historical shareholders, we have already been supporting the implementation of better practices at farming, processing and transportation levels. However, we recognize that there is so much more we, at Alvean, can do to make a positive impact on sugar supply chains. Which is why we are strengthening our environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies and approach. This work builds on our internal policies as well as the commercial clauses for social and environmental responsibility that we already have in place with suppliers. We have been a member of Bonsucro, the global sustainability platform for sugarcane, since our inception, and have embedded its standards into the way we do business as a global sugar trader.
Evolving our focus also pushes us to be more ambitious and to strive for greater positive impact.
Now we are carefully identifying and organizing our most material issues. We have begun this process working with external advisors, Copersucar and our main internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, we have developed a threeyear comprehensive road map. We will use this information to define a full sustainability framework, with a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) in the near future. These KPIs will include targets for our main areas of impact. We will transparently report our progress against these targets annually through a dedicated Alvean ESG report. Even though our strategy and KPIs are in development, we are already exploring ways to take action and improve our environmental performance. We are in the process of becoming a direct member of the Sea Cargo Charter, which is setting the standards for emissions reductions in the shipping industry. We already charter over 90% of our vessels through one of the founding members of the Sea Cargo Charter. We are also working with an independent consulting firm to measure the Scope 3 CO2 emissions in our global sugar supply chain and are currently gathering the relevant data.

While we recognize that each of the producing countries where we operate faces unique challenges around sustainability, we are encouraged by the fact that the sugar industry in Brazil – which provides around 90% of our total supply – has a strong track record of improving sustainability in sugarcane cultivation. We believe this gives us a strong foundation to achieve our goals.

ESG Summary
We are proud to publish our second sustainability summary, introducing our environmental, social and governance (ESG) approach and efforts for the fiscal years 2023–2025. This summary covers the activities of our seven locations (Brazil, Geneva, Bilbao, Shanghai, Miami, Hong Kong and Bangkok) from which we conduct our business and includes indicators for logistics and partner mills.
